How does the Visa debit/check card work?
The Visa debit/check card accesses your checking account. As you withdraw cash from ATMs or make purchases with merchants, the funds are debited (deducted) from your checking account. There is no monthly or annual fee, and no credit card balance to repay. The card can be used anywhere Visa is accepted worldwide since it is a product of Visa and carries security features similar to that of a Visa credit. The check card postings appear on your checking account statement and include the amount and merchant description. Your check card can also be used as an ATM card.
Why can't I change my PIN on my debit card?
As a security measure for you, we provide unique PINs with every card we issue. If your card and/or PIN is compromised, we can deactivate the card and issue a new card/PIN for your account.
What's the difference between signing for my purchases with the "credit" option and entering my PIN with the "debit" option?
When using a PIN, the funds will be deducted from your account immediately or within the same day of your purchase. When signing for purchases using the "credit" option, it may take 1-3 days for the deduction to be made. When given the option, you always want to press "credit" and sign for your purchases so you'll gain maximum purchase protection against fraud and chargeback rights that will make getting refunds on previously purchased items easier . By signing for your purchases, you also eliminate the need to enter your PIN in public.
What does it mean when my funds are put on hold?
When you use your card to pay for your purchases, the funds are generally put 'on hold' immediately in your checking account but the funds aren't actually withdrawn' for a couple of days. Similar to how check deposits can't be immediately withdrawn, account deductions can't immediately be cleared when the final amount isn't known. You might use your card at a restaurant and your card gets authorized before the tip is applied. For these types of purchases, funds are earmarked to cover the estimated cost of the transaction. This "hold" process safeguards both cardholders and merchants, ensuring cardholders don't spend more money than they have and merchants are paid for the transaction. While most transactions have a less than 24-hour hold, Visa requires issuers to remove all holds within 72 hours.
However, just because a transaction goes through, it doesn't necessarily mean you have enough money in your account to cover your charge.especially if you sign for your purchases. Unless the Visa network is down, your transactions are approved based on availability of funds at that specific time , which includes all of your overdraft options such as savings. The funds are placed on hold in your checking account immediately, but if your overdraft protection options were considered when approving the transaction, those funds are not transferred until the actual transaction posts (usually within 1-2 business days.) After the hold releases and if the funds are not available in your checking or savings, you will be charged NSF fees. You can check your account balance 24/7 at www.secuga.org or at 1-800-659-ANJI.

What should I know about phishing (identity theft) and debit cards?
Increasingly, phishing scamsters are pirating consumers' financial information by e-mailing or telephoning and asking for updates to sensitive personal information including names, account numbers, PINs, debit card numbers, Social Security numbers, etc. Once debit card numbers and/or PINs are pirated, thieves can potentially wipe out the funds in your checking account. The FBI is currently working a case involving several consumers mistakenly responding to phishing attacks with card numbers, CVV2s (the 3 digit code on the back of your card), and PIN data. The best protection against phishing is awareness. Keep the following tips in mind when using your debit card:
- NEVER give out your debit card account and/or PIN information (or any other personal financial data) via e-mail, Internet or over the telephone unless you initiate contact. If the credit union needs to contact you about your account, we already have your account information on file and would not need to ask for it.
- Do not be intimidated by the threat of serious consequences (like your account being terminated) if you do not immediately provide or verify information.
- Sign for your purchases so you don't have to enter your PIN in public
- Always take sales receipts and carbon copies and store safely in case you need them later.
- Record your transactions in your check register as soon as possible. Remember to include any financial institution fees that may apply.
- Review your statements carefully. If you suspect a mistake, call the credit union immediately.
- If your card is lost or stolen, contact the credit union immediately. This reduces your liability if fraud losses occur.
- Make sure to always keep your address and telephone number updated at the credit union to prevent red flags during address verifications.
- Keep your PIN private. Memorize it. Don't write it down or write it on your card, and never tell it to anyone.
What do I do if my debit card is lost or stolen?
You can cancel your debit card by calling 1-800-472-3272 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Why do I have a daily cash limit on my debit card?
Most Visa check cards offer a daily limit of up to $1,000. These spending limits are meant to protect you in case your card is stolen. Your card may be declined if you make daily purchases that exceed your daily withdrawal limit, even if you know you have plenty of funds within your checking account. You can always ask the credit union to lower or raise your purchase or withdrawal limits to suit your spending habits.
